Background: Cross is Norwegian-born son of a noted scientist, the late Theodoric Cross. In fact, Pieter was delivered from his mother's womb by the original Doctor Mid-Nite, who had just saved his mother from vagrants. Years later, Pieter was unable to save his mother from Chagas disease, which she caught in Brazil while visiting her son.
Pieter's crime-fighting career began as a doctor who ran a free clinic in Portsmouth City, Oregon, which led him to investigate a new street drug called A39, an accidental derivative of the steroid-like Venom, produced by an evil corporation called Praeda Industries, run by former villains the Terrible Trio. In retaliation, the corporation drugged him and he was involved in a car accident which took the life of a young woman named Katherine Blythe. Like the previous bearers of the name, he found that he could only see in pitch darkness, via infrared vision (his powers can also switch to ultrasonic vision). He, too, donned a costume to fight crime.
Doctor Mid-Nite is one of the most prominent physicians in the world. Along with his JSA colleague Mr. Terrific, the pair often serve as the metahuman community's "go-to" scientists. Among Cross' notable achievements as a metahuman physician are the discovery that Alan Scott was composed of the green flame of the Starheart; giving Power Girl her annual checkups as well as testing her powers; emergency surgery on Hourman; removal of the Brainiac virus from Oracle; the autopsy of Sue Dibny; and removing the sniper bullet that wounded Lois Lane in Umec.
In World War Three, he participated primarily as an emergency surgeon. Sometimes he would be taken on combat missions as a medic when his combat experience would also come in handy. He did not face the guilt most of his colleagues would have, for he truly did save lives operating on the wounded.
Personality : Cross is a physician first and a superhero second. The foremost thing on his mind is helping people with his superb skill as a surgeon and a crime-fighter. He does care deeply for his friends.

Brief Sample Roleplay "Shhh." Mid-Nite said, petting Charlie, his owl. "I see them. I've got it under control." He scanned the area, a clandestine drug deal taking place before him. If there was one thing he hated above all else, it was drug deals. He thought about the best way to approach this. He looked to Charlie, as if the owl would have any clever ideas. The owl let loose a hoot. Mid-Nite nodded. "Yes, the direct approach often times works the best." He cautiously set Charlie down on the ledge of the rooftop.
Climbing down the side of the building, he approached the drug deal. "I would drop the drugs if I were you, gentlemen." The dealers turned to him, both appeared Italian, great, the Mafia's back in town. The raised their guns and carried expressions of incredulity on their faces. Mid-Nite acted quickly, he set off one of his blackout bombs. The gas quickly spread over the area, keeping the dealers from seeing much of anything, but the good Doctor could see everything. He hit the gun out of the hand of the man closest to him, and kicked the man in the back, sending him plunging towards the other.
Swiftly, Mid-Nite gave both men a couple good strikes in the temples, knocking them out cold. The drivers of both cars that had arrived, got out, confused by the events that had just taken place. They raised their guns and unloaded into the black, gas. For a few seconds, there was nothing. Mid-Night leapt out of the gas for one of the drivers, pulling him over his shoulder, and bringing him down on the hood of his buick. As the other man clumsily attempted to reload his pistol, Mid-Nite approached him calmly. The man was sweating, he looked up. The man with entirely too much grease in his hair threw the gun away from himself, but his hands in the air, then got down on the ground curling up into the fetal position.
Mid-Nite walked to the trunk of one of the cars, a clunky "vintage" gas-guzzler. He kicked it open and looked inside. Heroin, pounds and pounds of it. Mid-Nite pulled a match, seemingly from nowhere, he lit it on his own costume and dropped it in the trunk, setting fire to the drugs. The gas having dissipated, showed the two men ontop of each other, out cold. One had a briefcase. Mid-Nite opened it and looked inside. That's a lot of money he thought. He whistled. Charlie came flapping over and landed on his shoulder. Mid-Nite walked away, briefcase in hand. There was an orphanage about to be torn down for lack of funds. Always the perfect hero eh? he thought to himself. Mid-Nite rolled his head back and laughed at the cliche nature of it all. Charlie rolled his head back and hooted, because he's an owl.
