To say that things had been easy lately for Dinah was a lie in the worst sense of the word. She had taken her part, as had many others, in the war. Dinah was always a strong woman, but her emotions and compassions were always a little on edge. With her string of misfortunes as of late, she had become a lonely and despondent person, though she still donned her Black Canary costume and fought crime rather blindly, though she did turn a keen eye to the ongoings of meta-human criminal undergrounds.
Tonight she walked in anger, her black boots splashing into the tiny pools that had gathered from recent rainfalls. She kept her azure eyes on a path in front of her, the fuzzy glow of street lamps lighting her path. She was thinking. Thinking about her fallen friends, her future and most notably Oliver. The two had had always had a rocky past, and tonight was no exception. The two had hit yet another rough patch, much to Dinahs distress. She hadn't really known who to turn to as of late, though maybe the direction of the Bird or the JLA would give her the recently lost sense of purpose.
As the once smoothed and perfectly paved streets turned into a slightly pot-holed path Dinah glanced around. She was not exactly familiar with this part of town, but the heroine was not worried. She could more than handle herself. Rather, she was interested in what the darkness might bring to her on this damp and hazy night.

Mid-Nite was passing through, on a sort of road trip. He had decided to walk the Earth for a bit, get back to himself. He was now awaiting the formation of a new Justice League. Since his involvement in the war, he had just been wandering blindly, unsure of what to do. His clinic was all but empty, Portsmouth had been cleaned up a lot and the occupants of his little "club" were more than adequate for taking care of the petty crime. Things had changed since the casualties of the war came through. He had been close to Powergirl, more than he would admit, not romantically, but they shared a sense of being lost. When the rest of the former JSA heard about it, Mid-Nite had no doubt that he had been one of those who took it hardest, perhaps not expressing it.
He was hanging out in an alleyway. He saw someone approaching. Were those fishnets? Strange. Ah, Black Canary. He did not want to talk to her, and he probably shouldn't, there was some bad blood there. But, Mid-Nite above all else was a healer, and he should at least make sure she was okay. A lot of heroes came back from the war for the worse. He slowly stepped from the shadows, not wishing to alarm her. He waved, a little sadly.
"Hello there, Dinah-er. Canary." He said, thinking twice about using real names in an unsecured location such as this.

Dinah could almost sense someone lingering in the alley as she stepped into the mouth of it. She pursed a lips a bit as she peered closer, a pair of eyes flicked and caught her attention. She stepped again, not a moments hesitation in her pace. the stranger stepped out then, and Dinah stared at him with unblinking eyes. It was Pieter, and at the moment she was not entirely sure how to approach him or what to say. He waved to her and she nodded back, keeping her hands buried in her jacket.
"Mid-Nite", she observed with a hint of a smile. Things were not the best between them. They had a relationship once, but that was before she had left both him and the JSA. She sensed that she was not exactly wanted here, but she wasn't the type to leave just because someone else wanted it. She stared at him in silence for a few moments before leaning against a wall. "Back from the great war?", she offered in a joking yet distressed fashion. She really was lost at the moment, confused about he role in this world...and maybe speaking to Pieter would help ease her worries.

Mid-Nite was glad to get the chance to talk to her. He knew it would be better for the both of them in the end. After she left the JSA they had never really reconciled. Maybe they could at least be on good terms again, if not friends. He half-grinned at the comment. He was sure she would have been a little sad as well. She lost as many friends as anyone had. Nobody expected it though. They were heroes, super heroes, they weren't supposed to die in bloody awful combat. But sometimes that was just how things went. They just had to try and pick up the pieces in the end.
"Yes, though I wouldn't exactly call it 'great'." He tried to smile to make sure she knew it was a joke and he wasn't trying to insult her based on her diction alone. "I guess I've got a lot to be thankful for, I didn't see much combat. They had more uses for me behind the lines, in the mobile hospitals." He looked down at the ground. "I think we can both agree that the rest of us didn't turn out so well. Hourman... he's been diving into his work lately, he'll disappear for weeks at a time on hunts. Like the first Hourman. I heard about some of the things he had to do over there. Since Powergirl especially..." He let the sentence trail off for a moment. "But it's good to see that some of us are still doing what we do, fighting the good fight. I've even heard about a new League coming into play, and I'll have to get in on that."

Dinah nodded absently as Mid-Nite began to speak. Her attentions were not focused on the man, or at least it would seem that way. She really did not want to appear to be the confused and heartbroken woman that she currently was. Besides, she was Black Canary, and she was tough as nails.
"You have me there", she said with a smirk as he made a crack at her "great" war comment. She did love the thrill of it all though, and for that the woman felt even guiltier. She had brought out an even more brutal side of her than even she was comfortable with. And so many had died. So many would never come back again. So many had changed. His speech suddenly caught her attention again as he began mentioning how others were. Her eyes softened, weakened, showed pain. Hourman had dived into his work? Powergirl was of course dead. And Ollie. She sighed and shook her head.
"A new Justice League?", she pondered both to herself and to Pieter. She almost instantly decided to join. She considered, with joy, that she just may have found direction again and smiled warmly for this first time in a long time. "Any other good news? Let's focus on the good news.."

"Well, some good news is I heard about the League from Stargirl." Pieter laughed as he thought back to the chance encounter back in New York. "She is, as always, almost annoyingly cheerful, she's really risen to the challenge these past few months I think." Pieter struggled to find anything good that had happened lately, things were pretty miserable all around. "Just, if you do end up joining whoever else is going to be in the new League, I think it would be good for everybody. If you ask me, the most important thing we can do right now is stick together, I'm certain Rick won't pass up this opportunity. I know Stargirl is showing up, I'm sure more of the JSA will come out of hiding too. It's just..."
Pieter trailed off, trying to think of how to explain what was going on. He hoped that if he was honest with Canary, it would help their friendship. After all, Pieter had been the one to refuse to even speak to her before.
"I know I never saw the things you or Rick did, or any of the rest of the old JSA alums. But I saw a lot of kids dying on the operating table before their time, because of people like us, because of us. We were so concerned with problems in the short-term we never thought to make sure there was any kind of stability. We were on the right track though, the world needs a team like the League or the Society to light the way to peace. And we need to be there for each other, especially for the ones coming back, especially for the younger ones, they barely started to become heroes before they were thrust into this war. I mean, my God, no one's even heard from Damage, at all since it started." He paused. "What I mean is, even if you already wanted to go, you have to know that this isn't just about us getting back in the game. The others need us to be there, we're the old ones now, and they'll be looking to people like the League for guidance." He stopped there. "Sorry for the dramatic speech, I haven't opened up for a while, I guess I couldn't shut up about it." Pieter looked around himself for a moment. It was dark, he wanted to see, so he pulled back his cowl, genuinely smiling. It felt good to get it out there.

Dinah smiled and shook her head at the mention of Stargirl. The two had never been incredibly close, but they had worked together and had known one another close enough the be considered friends by some...at least at one point in time. It was good to hear that she was still wiggling into those bike shorts.
"Still as plucky as ever?", she commented briefly as she looked up at Pieter as he continued to speak. He was a genius after all, and did have so much on his mind. He had no problem being vocal, something Dinah could only respect. She smiled and glanced to the mouth of the alleyway. "We did what we had to do, Pieter. Everyone wants us to apologize for that now. Hell, some are even being charged with war crimes. But we, as always, had to make the choices that other people were too cowardly to make. They've hidden behind our capes and blamed us for as long as....", she sighed and shook her head. The woman looked back at Mid-Nite. "And someone does need to be there for the kids that are in this business. Someone needs to tell them that they are neither the monsters nor the saints that they have been made out to be. We all have to do out part. We need to get back to basics too, we need to get back to helping people....", her voice trailed off and she looked away.
When she glanced back Pieter was unhooded and she smiled at him. "I'm glad you don't hate me", she said with a wry grin. The war had really put things in perspective for a lot of people. "It's good seeing you again...but...don't ever call me old."

Ronin was crouched on the edge of a roof top watching the Black Canary and Mid-Nite talk about different things that had been going on like the war and such not a whole lot of useful information really. He did noticed that there seemed to be something else between the two of them by there body language before he could think any more on it he spotted something just beyond Black Canary someone else was watching them. Slipping his hand into a holster on his leg he pulled out a couple shuriken and threw them at Black Canary or at lest it looked like it until they flew passed her face and embedded them selfs into hidden camera on the far wall. Not waiting to see what they where going to do he got ready for there coming attacks knowing nether one of them where going to be happy with what just happened.

"I could never hate you, Canary." Pieter laughed. "It just took me a little time. You were one stone cold fox back in the day, when we were young." He laughed again, but put his hands up defensively. "I'm sorry, I just had to go there." It was nice being able to joke around with friends again. There hadn't been much to joke about for quite a while. He was about to say something when a couple shuriken flew past Dinah's face. He was perplexed for a moment. The only thing he thought in that instant was: Huh.
He looked up. There was a man on the rooftop. He wasn't quite sure what was going on. The shuriken had hit something across the street, so he wasn't aiming for Dinah he supposed. He looked back at her.
"Did you want to go first or should I?" He asked, pulling the cowl back over his head. A strange turn of events, indeed.

Dinah shook her head and smiled. "Of course you could Pieter", she said with a hint of sadness and a hint of a joke. She would go on to listen to the man, her former friend and more, crack jokes. She could just smile, cross her arms and roll her eyes. "Yeah. Were.", she said with a wink as he began to laugh it off.
It was then that the sharp objects soared past her face, missing by mere inches. She watched as the slammed into some kind of device on the far end. Her eyes wandered up to the source of the weaponry, and then over to Pieter. "Oh please, Doc, it's been so long since I've seen you in action", she replied slyly with a double entendre.

"Oh. You're horrible." He said smiling. Pieter scaled the building using the rails of the fire escape quickly. He was having some fun. It was good to get out and fight random criminals at least a few times a week. and he got to hang with his old teammate again, that was as fun as anything. He was on the roof fast, blink of an eye fast. He sized up the guy with the sharp things.
"Ninja stars? Really?" He had a resigned, sarcastic expression on his face. "Tell me you had a nefarious reason for being up her, I beg of you. Just give me a reason to go black belt all over this roof."

Dinah shrugged casually and grinned. "You love it", she cooed as she watched the man began to scale the building. She quickly followed behind, swiftly ascending the railings. She stepped up on the roof, the shingles groaning a little as two allies stepped lightly across.
She grinned a little and shot a look as Pieter offered his sly comments about the shuriken. She glanced down and the moonlight caught the gleam of the still embedded weapons. Dinah shook her head and glanced between the two. "You've got even me shaking in my little boots", she whispered to Pieter.

Ronin snorted at what both Mid-Nite and Black Canary had said "My reasons for being here are my own but I thought I'd be nice and help you two fools from being taken in by the police." He told glaring at the two of them "Next time I'll stay in the shadows and let you love birds get taken in I wont lose any sleep over it but I'm sure you would." He said as he pulled something out of a pouch on his left side but kept it hidden just they still wanted to attack him he'd have a trick ready for them. "Are you always this rude to people you just met or am I special?" He asked Mid-Nite "I'd hate to see how you treat family members."

"You love it." Pieter whispered back to Dinah in response to her comment, making a play on her own words earlier.
"I don't think we have much to fear from the police, as far as I know we haven't done anything wrong." He watched the weird ninja guy carefully as he spoke. Taking readings on heartbeat and body temperature. He didn't know if this man was telling the truth, but he wasn't actually lying, maybe exaggerating. Pieter shook his head at the "love birds" comment. But back to serious business.
"Heh. Sorry to disappoint you with your eloquent tirade there. I'm only ever this rude to people whose shuriken fly past my friend's face." Pieter relaxed slightly.

Dinah rolled her eyes and shook her head as a grin crept across her face in response to Pieters comment.
She took the high road for a few moments, and listened to the banter between the stranger and Mid-Nite. She stood next to Pieter and her eyes became downcast almost instantly. "It's me, they're after me", she whispered carefully to him. She would explain that later.
At the moment she readied herself in a defensive position as she watched the stranger pull something out of a pouch.
