Chase had just barely missed the ferry over to the island his face was of course as impassive as ever as he glanced over his shoulder to Cassandra. "I remember hearing about this massive statue when I was about your age. "At the time I never believed it possible" he said as he looked over the water to where the massive lady stood her torch held high over her head.
"The French in a sign of friendship commissioned its construction here in New York. Personally I think the French just wanted to some how leave a mark on America." he told her before turning back to the statue, "they never really made much of an impact here and I think they saw America as the little brother that might just help them out of a jam."

Cass gazed at the Statue of Liberty on the faraway horizon. They had indeed just missed the Ellis Island ferry for it, but frankly they hadn't bought tickets for it either. She wondered if she should tell Chase about the Staten Island ferry - that only passed the Statue but it did offer a good look around. She listened with only half an ear to what he was saying as she looked around, gauging the fastest way from the Circle Line Tour dock to the Staten Island Dock. Either way it would probably be quite a hike when the dock here was already filling up with passengers for the next round.
When she heard him mention the French's opinion of the 'little brother' however, she looked back at him with a slightly mollified look. "The French did save America in the Revolutionary War," she replied. "Battle of Saratoga. We do owe them, so to speak. As to leaving a mark on us...French fries? Mark." She winked to show him she was kidding.
"Do you want to see the view from the Statue or merely look at the Statue?" she added, preparing to tell him about Staten Island if he answered the latter. She was personally hoping to see the sights from the Statue - it was nearly night, dusk was still sinking around them, and the lights of Manhattan would be breathtaking. As would Times Square, if they got there.

"Give me half an hour and I will be able to get us on the shore of that island," he said as he smiled at her for a moment his hands pointing to a spot where he could see a small but very dark shadow starting to grow.
"No need for a ferry." he told her before leaning up against the chain rail that was meant to prevent him from falling on in to the watery depth below. His face of course had no choice but to split in to a grin when around her. "And yes I am sure that the French are extremely proud of the fact that they are now responsible for the increased obesity rate that has fallen the American public."

Cass smiled a little bit as Chase pointed out that he could get them to the Statue in only a short amount of time. So he intended to shift then, from one shadow to another. She wasn't too keen with the idea, she felt shifting was uncomfortable and sometimes had the unexpected side effect of - well she didn't really want to think about that right now cause they were in a public place. She figured she could keep it under control for now.
She smiled at his quip about French fries. "I'm inclined to agree." She smiled a little wider when she noticed he was grinning too. Such a serious man but around her he couldn't quite keep the smile off of his face. Impulsively she leaned against him and stared at the growing shadow. "So what do you think of Watz Tech Incorporated?"

"Its an interesting business thou I have never had a head for it," he said as he let his eyes firmly come to a close. "I will tell you one thing tho more goes on behind that business then I think they let the press know, a lot more." he said as eh closed his eyes for just a moment before taking a deep breath.
"You don't enjoy shifting do you?" he said a she let his eyes close for a moment and tried to keep any hurt that entered his voice well hidden. "Makes you well nauseous? Doesn’t?"

Cass nodded at his assessment. "Well, we're used to levels of corruption, aren't we." She opened her eyes to see an elderly grandmother smiling at the two of them, and she flushed a little bit. As much tension as there was between her and Chase - and as much trust - she didn't think dating her bodyguard would put the smartest face forward. Not that she hadn't toyed with the idea. It wasn't like there was anyone else in this world for her. Except, perhaps for one person...but that had been a long time ago and she hadn't seen him since. And it had been years.
At his question about shifting, Cass looked up at him. In the fading light the shadows of his face were highlighted, and his strong jawline melded smoothly into the planes of his face. Damn if he wasn't one handsome man. And she hated the fact that his voice had gone emotionless when he'd asked her the question. It meant he was bothered. "I feel cold. And there's this terrible feeling of emptiness, like there's nothing to hold me or keep me from falling. It doesn't make me sick just...scared." She paused for a moment, then whispered into his ear "of course another side effect is it sometimes makes me hot."
She punctuated that comment with a sheepish smile.

“Cassandra I noticed you never actually asked me how old I am,” he said as he let his lips pause in a smile and his eyes looked back to hers with something that could only be called curiosity. It would seem that Cassandra was not the only one to suffer from the syndrome "so how about we play a little game as we wait. Twenty questions no limit on how personal they can be?"

He completely ignored the suggestiveness in her voice and in fact brought up age again! Cass almost went into a pout, her full lips pressing together and her eyes narrowing slightly. Then, she shook it off, shrugging. He didn't want to talk about it. Fine with her. They'd talk about what he wanted to talk about, which currently seemed to be his age. Or at least this twenty questions game he was proposing. No holds barred, no personal stuff held back. Her curiosity was piqued and she turned to him like a cat spotting a mouse. Her eyes bright, she said: "Well I'll accept the invitation. How old are you?"

Two hundred and thirty-five years three hundred and sixty-four days old" he said as he let a little grin come to his face. An eyebrow rising for a moment as if not believing it for a moment. "I was born in a village north of Tokyo before trade with the west began to grow. As far as I know I am one of the first mutations"

Two hundred and.... Cass stared openly, pretty sure her mouth was hanging open as well. Her eyes swept his frame and her mind washed back to some rather graphic memories...and nothing came back as even hinting he was that old. She looked over his black eyes and hair, seeing the Japanese features more clearly now that he had assured her he was from near Tokyo, and then over the rest of his body - young, muscular. Definitely not...but definitely so.
"Tomorrow is your birthday, then," she said, careful not to phrase it as a question. "I'll have to think of a...special present for you." Wow, for being that old he certainly...does...well.
A mutation. Definitely. There was something to be said for ninjutsu magic - she wasn't entirely sure it could have caused his longevity but she was more than willing to believe it helped. "You hold your age well," she finished with a smile.

"I have not celebrated a birthday for well I can’t actually remember the last time,” he said as he glanced a smile at her and let one hand come around her shoulder. "I did not lie when I told you it was Ninjutsu magic that I used. That's what taught me to control this power to harness it." he paused for a moment his hand coming up to touch her face "Its the constant use of my powers it seems to prevent my cells from degrading. It wont heal a wound but it sure as hell stops the aging process"

Cass relaxed into his grip, feeling safe. She closed her eyes as he ran a hand along her face and then turned to kiss his fingertips gently before returning her gaze up to his black eyes. The wind played with her hair, pulling it across her face and then slipping away like a caress. She probably looked quite beautiful standing there.
She listened to him talk about harnessing this mutation of his and nodded slightly. "Is that why you're always so secretive and quiet then?" she asked, using up another question. "You outlive all of your friends, lovers....family."
She hesitated on that last sentence, wondering if she should push the question - and then decided not to. If he wanted to say something about that he would.
"It would explain the life you chose," she began and then paused. "Let's pretend I didn't say any of that." No matter what it just wasn't coming out right.

"My wife died when I was thirty-five" he said as his eyes came to a close Raiders hit the village burnt it to the ground. "I can still remember her face her hands her touch the smell of the fresh rice cakes she used to make for me." he said as he closed his eyes too let out a long and strongly calm breath "I have seen three world wars fought in them all. I know that mankind will kill its self and I will live threw it."
"so tell me favourite food?" he asked as he raised an eye brow in hopes of changing the subject.

His voice grew deep and heavy, and Cass felt awkward leaning against him as he spoke of his wife, but she remained silent to let him speak through it, get al of it out. She understood loss - perhaps not quite in the way he had experienced it, but she had lost something long ago that she was still in pain for. Except she wasn't truly aware of the pain. She had pushed it away and hidden it under layers, and so mostly healed.
He changed the subject on her with a light question, and she looked up at him again, the sun flowing over her face. Her favorite food. She had a lot she liked to eat - her natural curiosity kept her trying new foods consistently. But she did have a favorite. "Rogan josh," she said with a smile. It was extraordinarily rare in Gotham, like lychee juice, but it came in sometimes. "I love rogan josh and lychee juice. I mean really - I love any non-vegetarian South Indian food, but rogan josh is really good. Lamb curry and naan." It was making her mouth water to talk about it!

"mmm never had it as far as I can remember" he said as he rocked his head to the side for a moment. "my personal favourite is sushi smothered with Wasabi sauce" he said as he started to lick his lips while looking out in the distance as if remembering a something from a time that was barely remembered. "nothing tasted better. Its what I had for lunch when JFK was shot."
